Great sunny day for the 5K
In these times of crisis, war, and elections, it felt different driving into the West Virginia Army National Guard training area, Camp Dawson. Thinking of our deployed troops, I looked around at the amazing facility nestled in the quiet hills. It's hard not to feel lucky.

With a lump in my throat wondering if thanking the guard would seem futile, I presented my ID at the gate to the soldier. I was greeted by MAGP regulars, troops, and some new smiling faces.

The course happens to be a highlight. Flat, fast, and slightly downhill on the return is a great combination and with perfect fall weather, this race is really enjoyable. The road is virtually traffic free and scenic, taking participants around the Camp, nearby country club grounds, and along the Cheat River.

Among the racers were some returning regulars who've been competing for the prizes in the last few Sprints. One of them was Travis Cyphert who claimed a commanding win at the FBIRA Jerry Dove Memorial 5K (Sprint Series race #8) on September 20th.

Cyphert was back in the hunt again for a first place finish. He was pursued by Mike Meadows who was running his second race of the day. Cyphert used his long strides to distance himself considerably, taking home the first place plaque with a time of 17:33. Mike Meadows of Martinsburg, WV took second with a smile and time of 18:07.

Jordyn Work of Grafton, WV, just 13 years old, ran fast to claim third in 18:53.

Dominating her field, Morgantown's Tammy Turner finished as the first female with a time of 21:14. She was 13th overall.

Shelly Work, ran steady for second and 19th overall, crossing the line with a time of 22:03.

Overall women's Sprint Series points leader and last year's champ, Kaylyn Harris (22:45), kicked it for third. At 10-years old, Harris is the youngest person to ever win overall in the MAGP Series.

After the event hot dogs and drinks were provided along with door prizes. Thanks to Sgt. Danny Swiger for his hospitality and volunteers.

It's about more than racing . . .
The race for overall points is getting tight.

Sue Heavner has been leading the women's overall Endurance Standings all year and vying for the top spot in the Sprint Series mid-season, but last year's champion, Kaylyn Harris, continues to be the one to beat.

In the exact opposite spot, Jim Banks is first in the men's overall Sprint Standings, but second to Murshid Latif in the race for top spot in the Endurance Series. Banks won second overall in both series last year.

Special thanks to this year's 2008 MAGP title sponsor for both series is Dynamic Physical Therapy. Look more articles about training and injury prevention from them on iPlayOutside. Visit one of their four offices in Westover, Fairmont, Jane Lew, and Mannington, WV.

New overall series supporting sponsor this year, We-Shred Document Shredding & Storage Company offers on-site shredding, off-site shredding, and secure document storage with climate controlled rooms. We Shred is an American company owned and operated by three native West Virginian brothers, Jeff, Ryan, and Jeremy Edwards.
