Sunday, October 25, 2009 -- Morgantown, WV / Hazel Ruby McQuain Waterfront Park
Deckers Creek Adventure Race & Festival (iPO Event Id#: 12305)

[Details] [Coverage] [Overall Results] [2007]

This event originated as CarpFest, named appropriately after the only fish living in Deckers Creek in the late 90's. CarpFest was a grassroots gathering with live music, hands-on environmental education activities, food and good company to celebrate Deckers Creek and Friends of Deckers Creek (FODC). With all of the different fish species now calling Deckers Creek and its tributaries home, the FODC thought this event could use a name change.

Friends of Deckers Creek (FODC) started in 1995 with the thought that Deckers Creek is beautiful, but abused, and needs friends. An informal group of kayakers, rock climbers and other creek lovers started organizing clean-ups of illegal dumps and monitoring water quality. By 1997, this group began receiving small grants to support its work. FODC then obtained 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2000 and held its first membership drive in 2001.

In 1998, the state Department of Environmental Protection and federal Natural Resources Conservation Service committed $10 million to clean up acid mine drainage in the Deckers Creek watershed, an effort that continues to be guided by FODC even now.
