Charleston's finest was working the Kanawha City beat last Saturday, but instead of enforcing the traffic laws they were encouraging runners to speed. Speeding is easy to do on the flat, out and back Run with a Cop 5K course.

More than 100 runners, walkers and wheel chair racers with police escort toed the line behind CAMC Memorial Hospital. Blue lights lead way as the pack quickly separated.

Five minutes into the race a morning shower cooled the runners from the muggy morning heat. In the heaviest downpour Jason Pyles flew by clocking a 16:16 finishing 46 seconds faster than Chris McGee with a 17:02.

Bobbie Jo Chapman ran away with the overall woman's trophy besting her competition by over a minute with a 21:12. Stephanie Abraham finish 2nd woman overall with a 21:29. Mark Rooper, walking faster than some run topped the other walkers with a 31:43. Anita Pennington made the woman's walk look easy posting a 45:01.

Sherry Dawson actually put the pressure on the PO PO my wheeling over the finish with a 21:32. The 15-19 year old men division was very fast. Brandon Harless (18:29:6), Andrew Shaffer (18:32:3), and Aaron Peal (18:33:6) all finished within four seconds of each other.

Once again the Charleston Police Department organized and delivered a great race.

Don't miss the #4 in the 2010 Spring/Summer Speed Series, the Independence Run/Walk on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 7:45 pm. This 5K Run and 2-Mile Walk will be at Haddad Riverfront Park and Kanawha Blvd. in Charleston, WV.

CityThe City of Charleston

Charleston is a family-friendly city full of great things to see and do for people of all ages. The best part is that in addition to great variety, everything is close by. In fact, you could fill a day with shopping dining and recreation without ever having to get back in your car. And those places that do require a car trip are quick and easy to get to.
