Despite chilly temperatures and rain drizzles, 43 participants registered for the first annual Earth Day 10K Race. Joseph Mullen was the overall winner of the race, finishing with a time of 38 minutes and 23 seconds.

Winners of the race were presented with medals made from recycled glass.

One of the organizers of the Earth Day event, Sherrie Hunter with the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority, said nearly $3,000 was raised for West Virginia University's Children's Hospital.

Many people gathered around the School of Harmony tent to hear the musical talents of The Brothers and Sisters of Bluegrass, while they played as if there wasn't a cloud in the sky.

Several other booths were set up as well, including 4-H, face painting, Raleigh County Humane Society, and representatives from the Piney Creek Watershed Association.

Sweet Frog Yogurt characters walked around and greeted people during the Earth Day celebration.

"We intend for our Earth Day event to grow by leaps and bounds in the upcoming years," Hunter said.

Despite the weather, Hunter said she was very pleased with the turnout for the event, which is expected to become an annual celebration.
