The toughest 5K in the area? It just may be! Those were the words of one runner who had just finished the two laps of the 1.55 mile course, completing the inaugural CFC 5K held at the NASA IV&V Facility in the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont, WV on Saturday, 9/15/2012.

Runners and walkers enjoyed the beautiful weather and challenging course for the first-ever CFC 5K to be held in theI-79 Technology Park. Things started off at 8:30 AM with a Kid's K, initiated by their very own rocket launch at the start. Some kids were so mesmerized, they forgot to start running! The 5K run/walk kicked off at 9:00 AM with another live rocket and fortunately all of the adults left the start line on time, despite the distraction of the rocket in the air.

Ron Weist of Fairmont, WV was the winner of the 5K in the open male division finishing in 17:42.7 minutes. Ron was followed Earl Ambrozak and Devan Hamrick, finishing the grueling course in 19:05.8 and 19:44.0, respectively. Debbie Conner of Uniontwon, PA was the winner of the 5K in the open female division finishing in 21:10.9, followed by Blanca Skaggs and Sarah Ray, finishing in 23:38.3 and 23:58.7, respectively.

After the race, kids enjoyed face painting, coloring, rocket launching and many other educational activities provided by the Education Resource Center (ERC) located at the NASA IV&V Facility. Adults were serenaded by a live bluegrass band and enjoyed fresh fruit and foods. The winners of the 5K were presented with a beautiful basket of goods provided by Heston Farm Winery.

With a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and knowing that a lot of the 'leftover' food and drinks were to be donated to the Union Mission in Fairmont, WV, kids, runners and walkers left the event knowing that not only had they completed a tough course, but that they had also made a significant contribution to local and national charities that day.

We look forward to next year and the 2nd Annual CFC 5K at NASA IV&V!
