Now in its ninth year, the Main Street Classic in Uniontown is proving to be one of the best kept secrets in 5K racing. The race boasts a festival atmosphere with a kids' race and silent auction to go along with the 5K run/walk.
The day got started with the kids' race at 8:30am. Almost a dozen kids toed the line for the race around the block. They were greeted at the finish by a friendly clown handing out goody bags loaded with treats and trinkets.
Once the kids were occupied with their racing goods, it was time for the big kids' race.
The race started with a slight wrong way that was quickly corrected. Jumping into the lead early was Heather Parks, the eventual women's winner. It didn't take the men long to find their way and catch back up.
Jeremy Pevahouse wasted no time trying to correct his misdirection to take the lead and win the race in 18:11. Not far behind was 14-year-old Bernard King with an 18:27. Henry Bowman squeaked in under the 19-minute mark to take third in 18:56.
Women's winner Heather Parks had a little trouble with the course, but no trouble with the competition winning by almost a minute with a 20:21 over Elizabeth Trump in 21:17. Rounding out the top 3 was Ashley Carroll in 21:52.
Matt Ptacek (28:15) and Debbie McGee (31:18) had no problem with the competition in the walk, both winning by almost two minutes.
All funds raised will go to support the homeless men, women, and children in the City Mission homeless shelters in Uniontown, PA.
