With only one more race to go in the Spring/Summer Speed Series, (Independence 5K Run & Walk on July 3) the quest for overall points champ heats up. Marshall Spradling currently leads the men's overall series with the fastest Cumulative time of 50:40. Glenn Baldwin trails him by 3 minutes and 81 seconds. Connie Young (1:06:38) is ahead of Roxane Carte in the women's race for series points.

Saturday's race was #3. Although new to being in a race series, the event itself is at more than 10 years old and has been benefiting the Kanawha County Special Olympics and the WV Law Enforcement Torch Run Fund all the while.

Both flat and fast, the course was dominated by young runners. John Steadman and Marshall Spradling ran together the entire race. Steadman kicked for the last 100 yards for a 17:05, spreading 5 seconds between himself and Spradling to finish 1st.

Adam Coon (17:36), was 3rd with Matt Burton trailing 23 seconds behind.

Glenn Baldwin was the first male master with a time of 18:42, crossing for 6th overall. Baldwin is a familiar face at Charleston area races. I first met Glen back in 1999 at the
Poca River 15K where afterwards we headed out with Pat Board and crew to eat breakfast. Charleston may be a big city in West Virginia, but it's small town at heart.

Connie Young (22:29) was untouched as the 1st woman. Roxane Carte (22:55), ran for 2nd with Lynn Fish staying ahead of Laurene Johnson to claim 3rd.

Donald Peal finished as the 1st Law Officer with a time of 21:26.

There were quite a few under age 14 runners out there too. Two such racers, Joe Schwartz and Matthew Brafford, finished in the top 25.

When the last walker finished raffle prizes, awards, and refreshments were enjoyed.
